The old Romans made much of victory in war. You probably know all about how
"triumphs" were celebrated at Rome. But do you know about "spolia opima"?
They were the top spoils; a general's arms taken by a general.
Among other "spolia" were the Rostra; the speaker's platform in the Forum
Romanum from where people such as Cicero delivered orations. "Rostra" means
the curved ends of ships' prows, and the ones in Rome were captured in the
4th c BC and fixed to the brickwork on the platform.

"Victori sunt spolia" = the winner gets the spoils.

On a similiar note, the English word 'robe' comes from the Late Latin word
'rauba' meaning spoil, the taking of a man's garments, from Old High German
'raub'. [Webster's]

The proverb is said to have originated in the United States and to have
been first used in 1832 by Senator William Learned Marcy (1786-1857) of New
York:

Off-the-peg suggestions are "Victori spolia" and "Victori exuviae":
