Discussion:
How do I address the Pope in Latin?

Okay, a friend in the Catholic newsgroup I'm posting in would like to
make people write a letter to the Pope on a matter too tricky (and
off-topic) to be explained here. I already did that a year ago, but I
want to write again in that matter and I thought I could combine that
with some Latin language practice (i.e. write the darned thing in Latin
-- maybe I'll get an answer then. If not, I'll have written a letter in
Latin and learned something <cough cough> useful).

Does anybody know the correct way to address the Pope in Latin
(especially salutaion)? Is there any information available (online,
preferably) as to form of a letter of this kind? Is there anything like
a formal way of addressing somebody (like the plural forms of the
sencond person in German and rench)?

Any information vastly appreciated....

There's a letter on-line:

http://www.kuria.lublin.pl/prawo/synod_1928/acta_synodalia.htm

Another useless suggestion! I very much doubt that you would get
away with that unless you happened to be that author. But I know
nothing about these matters.

Don't try [http://www.vaticano.it] unless your special interest is
"plastic webbings for furniture". The actual address, as you no
doubt know, is [http://www.vatican.va].

Uselessly,

Hey, that was all quite useful indeed!

"Sanctitas tua, or vestra, or sanctissime pater", according to:
http://www.ccel.org/s/schaff/encyc/encyc09/htm/iv.iii.xxxii.htm

Also "Beatissime pater":
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Beatissime+pater%22+pope

As to the form of a letter, all I could find is how to write a petition:

Just as an offhand piece of unsolicited (but in my opinion elementary)
advice, I think it is an EXTREMELY bad idea to address the Pope in any
language in which you are not thoroughly proficient... unless you enjoy
the prospect of making an ass of yourself to the Pope!
